Job Description
Our client operates a well-established, multi-disciplinary veterinary hospital equipped with advanced surgical and diagnostic facilities. They are currently recruiting for a Lead Theatre Nurse (RVN) to oversee and coordinate surgical operations within their theatre department. This is a full-time role, working 40 hours per week across 8-hour shifts. Shifts typically start at 8:00 am, with an occasional later shift required approximately once every six weeks. The role also includes participation in a 1-in-6 Saturday rota.
This position offers a fantastic opportunity for a motivated RVN to step into a leadership role within the surgical team. The successful candidate will work closely with veterinary surgeons, nurses, and support staff to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the theatres. They will contribute to a varied surgical caseload including orthopaedic, soft tissue, and emergency procedures, and will be instrumental in mentoring and supporting junior team members. Leadership training and development support will be provided where needed.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating surgical activities and managing theatre workflows
- Maintaining surgical equipment and overseeing stock and consumables
- Ensuring accurate and timely theatre record-keeping
- Liaising with vets and reception to optimise scheduling
- Mentoring and supporting the nursing team
- Maintaining high standards of hygiene, safety, and patient care
Requirements
The ideal candidate will:
- Be a qualified RVN with at least 3 years’ post-registration experience
- Have strong skills in anaesthesia, surgical preparation, and post-operative care
- Possess excellent organisational and communication skills
- Demonstrate a passion for leadership and continuous improvement
- Previous leadership experience is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided
